Campaign Announcements

Soon, individuals will start announcing their candidacy throughout Texas for County and District Judge positions.

Studies have shown that most people don't really know much about the person for whom they vote. Some consider it a popularity contest and others believe that those running for office say whatever they need to, in order to get elected.

Possibly all of these are true, but the most important thing to remember is that the voter is in charge of the process. These people you will be electing are supposed to work for you, the people. You decide if you want someone working for you that is amoral, a thief or a liar. Of course, people that run for public office, especially a judge, would always do the honorable thing, right? You might be surprised.

There will be some people that are meant for the job and others that have no business making decisions that affect the lives of others.

What type of person should a judge be?

I always thought that a judge meant that you should try to do the right thing and along the way, that you had gathered some amount of wisdom. King Soloman is the prototypical judge. A real judge doesn't concern themselves with helping one side or the other in a trial. A real judge does not play favorites or allow the Constitution to be violated just so a conviction can be obtained. A real judge is sometimes unpopular for making the right decision based on what the law demands, not what is popular.

A real judge is rare.

Montgomery County is lucky in that we do have some fine people on the bench now, such as Judge K. Michael Mayes. A finer judge, you will not find anywhere and someone that I wholeheartedly support for re-election.

And we have several, other fine people that have announced they will be running for elections. In my opinion one of the best choices we have is Lisa Benge. Lisa has been a prosecutor, an appellate attorney and currently is in private practice. She has been on all sides and knows how to read the law, but more importantly has proven that she will follow the law. She runs a very successful practice and is not a career government employee with no outside experience.

Ms. Benge has announced she will be running for the 221st Judicial District Court of Montgomery County and I think we are lucky to have such a fine jurist running for judge.

Attend functions and be sure to learn about the candidates. You need to know who you are voting for and whether they are worthy to hold public office.

Justice for All

The purpose of our great Constitution is the protection of the defenseless and defense of the powerless.

This blog is not about the criminal justice system in the form that I have typically written. This is about justice for all.

I urge each of you to read this blog and take three minutes of your time to act.

Below is correspondence I have sent to those on my email lists. I would urge each of you to cut and paste it and forward to everyone on your email lists.

Friends and compadres,

Below (attached) is a petition I have started and am asking all of you to sign and forward to the Japanese Consulate, here in Houston, Texas. I am NOT asking you for money.

I am only asking for you to take three minutes of your time and watch the trailer for the movie "The Cove" about the killing of dolphins in Japan. The trailer can be viewed here http://thecovemovie.com/.

This movie documents the killing of thousands of dolphins in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. The killing goes on for 6 months serves no purpose. The justification is that the dolphins are depleting the fishing resources and are being eradicated as pests. Killing them for no purpose other than to kill them. Additionally some of the slaughtered meat is given to school children in lunches. The Japanese people do not know this is going on, but their government does. This meat provided to school age children is tainted with unhealthy, and in some cases, dangerous amounts of mercury.

Hundreds of dolphins are rounded up together and slaughtered. These are beings that by all accounts are aware and sentient. If they looked in a mirror, they would recognize themselves and they are the closest being to us intellectually, and some believe they may even be more intelligent.

Imagine being herded into a corral with your family, children, parents and watching all of them slaughtered. Please help stop this senseless killing.

Please cut and paste the attached petition into an email addressed to the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston and email to info@cgjhou.org.

I have also forwarded the same email to the White House and ask for you to do the same. The web site to send correspondence to the White House is http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/.

Finally, please sign up for the Facebook page to stop the Taiji killings. Here is the link http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=59506167641

The petition can be found 20090619 form letter.pdf. Please cut and paste into an email and forward to the Consulate-General of Japan.

Thank you for taking the time to give this issue the importance it deserves.
